Historical Gotland

Historical activities and sights
Experience life in the Middle Ages, or become a Viking for a day. Feel your heart beat faster as you watch the knights jousting. On Gotland, you don’t just look at history – you live it!

Museums – a necessary good
The more you know, the more you’ll get out of your historical adventures. A visit to the County Historical Museum will provide you with the knowledge you’ll need to familiarise yourself with Gotland’s history in more detail.

The Gotland Historical Museum is actually eight museums in one. Five of them are in Visby; the others are farm museums in central and southern Gotland. Combo-tickets give you access to several of these museums. A visit to the museum will give you much more than cold facts. At the museum you can get close to the world’s largest hoard of Viking silver, experience the cold stones and darkness of a 17th-century prison and view the unique Gotland picture stones close up.

A treasure hunt for the whole family
Gutorm’s treasure has disappeared. Medieval kings, Russian admirals and ordinary Gotlanders have failed to find it. However, the legend lives on in folklore, and now Gutorm’s relatives appear to have picked up the scent. To solve the mystery, Gutorm needs help! The Treasure Hunt is suitable for the entire family and offers plenty of opportunities for having some exciting adventures and acquiring a good dose of historical knowledge along the way. You solve the mysteries in your own time – you’ve got the whole summer to do it in!

Live like a Viking
The aroma of grilled lamb mingles with smell of smoke and tar. Real Vikings – well, almost – stroll round about you. Here you can bake bread, learn to use a bow and arrow, make jewellery, and much, much more. Naturally, all in genuine Viking style. The Viking Village in Tofta recreates a typical 9th-century village, featuring a longhouse, a smithy, market stalls and a crafts house.

The Middle Ages are back!
Every year during one week of August, the Middle Ages return to Gotland. The streets of Visby are thronged with jesters, beggars, burghers and other figures, all attired in medieval garb. The year is 1361, and you are part of it! Medieval Week is a must for everyone interested in history. There are also various entertainments and events, lectures, theatrical performances and a lot more besides. You’ll find further information at the Medieval Week’s website
Jousting
Jousting calls for high precision and nerves of steel at full gallop. Tournaments were and are a spectacular public festival, with a cast of noble knights, fair maids and a sprinkling of thugs just spoiling for a fight. In July, tournaments are held at Strandgärdet in Visby, and during Medieval Week at Gotlandsänget/Paviljongsplan. Read more about jousting at the Medieval Week’s website

Performances take place in the open, with the lovely park behind the old Cistercian monastery forming a magnificent backdrop.
