Historical Gotland
Linnaeus on Gotland

”“…meanwhile, Klinteberg grew ever closer, and the shores of Gotland lay on our right hand once the Karlsö islands had taken their leave, built, as it were, of limestone and reaching to an impressive height. The sun shone warm until two of the clock after noon, when we made port in the city of Visby.”

The words are those of Carl von Linné, or Linnaeus as he is perhaps better known, on reaching Gotland in 1741. Accompanied by six young assistants, he travelled throughout the island in search of useful minerals, plants and animals.
Linnaeus’ curiosity, detailed descriptions and the many comments entered in his record of his trip to Gotland make entertaining reading even today. So in 2007, the year of his tercentenary, Gotland, like the rest of Sweden, is going out of its way to celebrate his achievements!
Throughout the year, there will be any number of opportunities for riding, hiking and following in the footsteps of Linnaeus as he made his way across Gotland.
Follow in the footsteps of Linnaeus. See what Linnaeus saw! With the Linnaeus map as your guide, you can visit 27 different places that Linnaeus himself visited during his tour of Gotland. The Linnaeus map is available at the Visby Tourist Office and a variety of other places.
