SCENE GOTLAND

The Gotland music scene
Here indie pop mixes with classical, hard rock and Swedish folk music, jazz and folk music. In the summer many national and world greats appear on Gotland.

Many are the memories of concerts on Kneippbyn, with tremendous sunsets in the background, or on Warfsholm’s beautiful stage by the sea. Jazz lovers will find what they need at Jazzklubben in spring and autumn. Just what’s going on this year?
Check the event calendar..

Another site for those interested in jazz is Gotlandsmusiken, the Gotland county band, which appears around 500 times a year in various guises. For Gotlandsmusiken http://www.gotlandsmusiken.se

À propos jazz! Did you know that Gotland’s funniest woman – Babben Larsson – is also a singer. Her repertoire is wide, her voice deep and her melody big band. Read more about Babben here

If someone can be said to have put Gotland on the world map of classical music, that someone has to be Staffan Scheja. In the early 1980s the world famous piano virtuoso took the initiative for a chamber music festival in the ruins of St Nicolai in Visby. Today the Gotland Chamber Music Festival is a recognised name in the world of classical music and the list of major artists who have visited the festival is long and impressive. Read more at the chamber music festival’s website:http://www.gotland-chamber-music-festival.info

Creativity knows no bounds in Gotland’s musical life. It is tremendously difficult to put an epithet on Gotland music. The typical ones are still breadth, happiness, will and desire.

You can find many of the island’s artists in different genres on the network Gotland Artists

Musik på Gotland is another meeting place: http://www.musikpagotland.org

For more than 20 years the Gotland group Ainbusk ahs occupied a special place in the Swedish music scene. It began with four lasses in När in the south-east part of the island. Today the concept is Swedish pop songs with their roots in both the singer-songwriter genre and folk music. Read more about Ainbusk here

Annika Fehling
is one of the most industrious artists on the island throughout the year. She does not represent only herself, but also has an ability to tempt talent here to her ”Living Room” from other places. There are sometimes guests from as far away as the USA. For a couple of years Annika, together with Brett Perkins and Eva Hillered, has been leading in international singer/songwriter retreat in Holmhällar, southern Gotland. Check Annika out on http://www.annikafehling.com

Some other favourites that have attracted attention beyond he borders of the island are the bands Pascal, Tony Clifton and PicaPica Orchestra. Check them out on MySpace!

Another route to Gotland’s musical life is the music production companies.
